Complimentary parking is provided for guests and vendors of the Hilliard Art Museum. All other vehicles will be ticketed and towed away at the owner’s expense.
The Hilliard Art Museum grounds are available to the public as a beautiful backdrop for photographers. In the past, this was free. However, due to the rising cost of maintaining the grounds and the water wall, effective August 1, 2024, a $25/hour fee will be associated with each photo session.

Due to the cost of maintaining the water wall, the plaza, and safety concerns, the following protocols are mandated:

- No confetti, streamers, banners tied or affixed to the building, releasing of balloons
- No entering the water wall pool – no standing in, sitting in, or laying in the water pool
- No pets allowed in the water pool

Help us protect the art by following these museum rules.
- Please don’t touch the art, unless it is part of the artist’s intent to experience their work. Please be sure to stay at least twelve inches away from labels, display cases, and gallery walls.
- Food, drinks, gum, and smoking are prohibited in the galleries.
- Leave coats, backpacks, and large bags in your vehicle or at the Visitor’s Services Desk.
- Feel free to take photos, but please turn off the flash. Personal photography is permitted. For more info, please refer to our Guidelines listed above.
- Write or sketch with pencils only. No pens or markers allowed.
- Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Ask about our family-friendly activities at Check-In.
- Only service animals are allowed inside the museum buildings. Emotional support animals are not permitted.
During your visit:
- We love our art! Please refer to our Museum Rules above to help us keep the art safe for all visitors.
- Please put phones on silent and refrain from answering calls during your tour.
Chaperone Responsibilities:
- Chaperones are responsible for the behavior of their group at all times—make sure students understand and observe the guidelines listed above.
- One chaperone is required per ten students.
- Please avoid side conversations with other students or adults when on a guided or docent-led tour.
The Hilliard Art Museum is committed to stewarding and protecting the works of art in its care while promoting access to images for scholarly, educational, and public use. This Rights & Reproductions Policy outlines the conditions under which images from the Museum’s collection may be requested, reproduced, and distributed.
General Principles
- Images of artworks and exhibitions are protected by copyright unless explicitly noted as public domain.
- Use of images must always respect the integrity of the artwork and the rights of the artist, lender, or estate.
- Images may not be altered, distorted, or used in a misleading context.
- Visitors are welcome to take photographs in most gallery spaces for personal, non-commercial use, unless otherwise posted.
Photography of the Collection
- Visitors are permitted to take non-flash, personal-use photographs of works on view, unless otherwise indicated.
- Photography of temporary exhibitions may be restricted based on lender agreements.
- Tripods, monopods, and professional equipment require advance approval.
Copyright & Ownership
- The Hilliard Art Museum holds physical ownership of works in its collection; however, it does not necessarily hold copyright to all works.
- Copyright may remain with the artist, the artist’s estate, or another rights holder. Permission to reproduce images of such works must also be obtained directly from the rights holder.
- Works in the public domain may be reproduced more freely, though attribution to the Hilliard Art Museum is required.
Requests for Images
- Requests for images must be submitted by completing an Image Request Form (available by contacting staff through the Contact Page inquiry form).
- Please allow sufficient time (typically 3–6 weeks) for processing, particularly for new photography requests.
- The Museum reserves the right to decline requests at its discretion.
Scholarly & Educational Use
- Low-resolution images may be used for classroom teaching, research, or presentations with proper credit:
- “Courtesy of the Hilliard Art Museum, University of Louisiana at Lafayette.”
- Permission is required for reproductions in academic publications, dissertations, or digital repositories.
Commercial Use
- Any use of images for commercial purposes requires a written license agreement and may be subject to fees.
- Commercial uses include, but are not limited to: product packaging, advertising, film/television, merchandise, and publications sold for profit.
- Requests must be submitted in writing to the Museum. Initial requests can be submitted through the Contact Page Form.
- Fees are assessed based on the type, print run, distribution, and nature of the project.
Media & Press
- High-resolution images are available upon request to accredited media outlets for news coverage, reviews, and event promotion related to the Hilliard Art Museum.
- Images must be credited as provided by the Museum.
Cropping, overlaying text, or other modifications are not permitted without prior approval.
Credit Line
- All reproductions must include the credit line:
- Courtesy of the Hilliard Art Museum, University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
- If applicable, additional credit (artist, title, date, medium, accession number, copyright holder) must be included as provided by the Museum.
Restrictions
- Images may not be altered, cropped, overprinted, or manipulated in any way that distorts the integrity of the work.
- Permission is granted for one-time, non-exclusive use only. Further reproduction or reuse requires a new request.
- Digital images may not be resold, distributed, or posted online in high-resolution form without prior approval.
Fees
- Fees for image licensing vary depending on use.
- The Museum may waive or reduce fees for scholarly or non-profit educational uses.
- Photography fees may apply if new photography is required.
